How to safely get a tan faster

Tropical Sun: How to safely get a tan faster

A lot of people love to get a tan under the sun, but long exposure to the sun has a variety of risks even if you wear sunscreen. Here are some tips to get a tan faster without causing any damage to the skin:

Choose the best time

If you want to get a tan quickly, the sun is hottest between noon to 3 pm. However, you should still avoid long sun exposure during those times since the intense sun rays are likely to increase your risk of skin cancer. If you have fair skin, the best time to tan is after 3 pm to avoid burning.

Your skin has a melanin cut-off, usually after two to three hours of exposure to the sun. This is when your skin can no longer produce any more melanin that is responsible for tanning. If you tan past this point, you will be putting your skin at risk.

Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30

Never use an oil or lotion that does not contain sun protection. Always use sunscreen with UV protection of at least SPF 30 whether your skin is fair, medium or dark. An SPF of 30 is effective in blocking UVA and UVB rays yet still allowing your skin to tan.

Cover your body with at least an ounce of sunscreen and reapply if your sun exposure exceeds two hours.

Exfoliate your skin

Prep your skin before tanning by gently exfoliating it. This will pave the way for your tan to develop faster. If you do not exfoliate, your skin will likely flake off.

Eat foods that increase your skin’s own SPF

Foods that are rich in lycopene and carotene are found to help protect the skin from the damage caused by UV rays. Below are foods that are rich in carotene and lycopene:

  • Potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Melon
  • Peppers
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Tomato
  • Guava

Drink a lot of water

Hydration is vital to prolong your tan and make your skin more supple. Drink a lot of water especially when under the sun to prevent dehydration that can cause ailments. You can also use creams or aloe vera gel to hydrate the skin and prevent peeling.

Wear the right clothes

Try wearing a strapless top to help you get an even tan without any lines. Cover certain areas that you think will burn easily. You must also protect your hair so make sure to wear a hat.
